In the traditional ceramic industry, ZrSiO4 and zircon powder are important raw materials. It is mainly active in ceramic glazes, blanks, and pigments, and plays the role of opacity and whitening. Moreover, it is also the main crystal phase (stable phase) in ceramic pigments such as zirconium yellow and vanadium zirconium blue.
With the further increase in the production of sanitary ceramics and daily-use ceramics in my country, the amount of Zirconium Silicate presents a growing trend.

Zirconium Silicate powder has excellent covering performance and opacifying effect in glazes in the ceramic industry. So ZrSiO4 is widely used in the production of ceramic glazes.
Zirconium Silicate is the one with the widest source, the best performance, and the best price ratio among various opacifiers.
Since zircon has a high refractive index and low solubility, it is relatively stable in various firing atmospheres, and its price is not expensive. These excellent conditions make it the preferred opacifying agent for current opacifying glazes.

There are two main functions of Zirconium Silicate in ceramics:
1. Improve the hardness of ceramic glaze.
Zirconium Silicate has good chemical stability and is not affected by the firing atmosphere of ceramics. Thus it can significantly improve the separation performance of ceramic blank glaze and increase the hardness of ceramic glaze.
2. Whitening.
ZrSiO4 powder can play a whitening role in ceramic glazes. Since it forms baddeleyite after ceramic firing, which scatters incident light waves and achieves opacity and whitening effects.

As most of the opacifying glazes of architectural ceramics use zirconium opacifying, so Zirconium is significant in the ceramic industry. Zirconium opacity has no requirement for the firing atmosphere, which brings a lot of conveniences to batch production in the ceramic industry.
