Description
Boron Nitride (BN) is a non-toxic, heat- and chemical-resistant compound most commonly found as colorless crystals or white powder. Hexagonal Boron Nitride is a stable phase at normal temperature and pressure. Under high temperatures and pressure, Hexagonal Boron Nitride will synthesize cubic boron nitride and wurtzite boron nitride. Boron Nitride has a graphite-like hexagonal plate-like crystal structure. Boron Nitride, often referred to as “white graphene” or “inorganic graphite”. But it has higher oxidation resistance at 800°C.
Boron Nitride is an advanced synthetic ceramic material available in both solid and powder forms. BN is a hard ceramic material with high thermal conductivity and good thermal shock resistance due to its similar planar hexagonal structure and lubricating properties. Boron Nitride usually referred to as “white graphite” has a similar microstructure to graphite. After machining, it can be used without additional heat treatment or firing operations. Unlike graphite, it is an electrical insulator and while not as easy to machine as machinable ceramics, it outperforms other traditional ceramics in this regard.
Compared with other ceramics, Cubic Boron Nitride (c-BN) has special properties such as hardness and strength. Therefore, abrasives and cutting tools will often use Boron Nitride. C-BN has the second-highest thermal conductivity after diamond and a relatively low dielectric constant.
